You may have heard the song “Endless Night,” by the Doors. You may not have heard that its lyrics were inspired by a poem by William Blake.
From Jim Morrison’s lyrics:
Realms of bliss, realms of light
Some are born to sweet delight
Some are born to sweet delight
Some are born to the endless night
End of the night, end of the night
End of the night, end of the night
It’s interesting how in retrospect it seems like Jim Morrison was always singing about his own mortality. If someone is born to night, then “end of the night” means the end of that person’s life, I would think.
Here’s a quote from the William Blake poem that inspired Morrison:
Every night and every morn
Some to misery are born,
Every morn and every night
Some are born to sweet delight. Some are born to sweet delight,
Some are born to endless night.
That is massive. Did Morrison feel that he himself had been born to endless night?
